San Mateo County Library

The Peninsula Library System, the San Mateo County Office of Education and your local public library are working together to ensure that every student in San Mateo County has a public library card. Click here for more information on how to get a card.

Student Resources Offered through the SMCL System

The San Mateo County Libraries offer a wide range of online resources for students, including ebooks, audiobooks, a free online tutoring service called Help Now, and several large collections of ebooks and articles to support research for homework assignments.  Most of these resources require a San Mateo County Library card (beginning with 29041).  If you need help getting a card, or have questions about your library account or any of the library resources, please call 1-833-YES-SMCL, or fill out this form: https://smcl.org/get-in-touch/

CHECKING OUT LIBRARY BOOKS:

The Pacifica Libraries are now offering a safe way to check out books and other library materials through curbside pick-up.  Simply search for the book you want using the online catalog at https://smcl.org/, and click Place a Hold.  You will be asked to login to your library account with your library card number and PIN (usually the last four digits of your telephone number).  Select the library where you would like to pick up the book. You will receive an email once your book is available, and you can pick it up at the library door, Tuesday through Saturday from 11am to 4pm.  

EBOOKS AND AUDIOBOOKS:

If you are looking for a particular ebook, you can search for it in the catalog at: https://smcl.org/ When you find the book you want, you can follow the link to check the book out if it’s available, or put it on hold if it’s checked out. Here are the major ebook collections offered by the library:

Hoopla: https://www.hoopladigital.com/ Everything on the Hoopla site is available to borrow right away. It includes eBooks, audiobooks, comic books and graphic novels, and streaming movies and TV shows. You can also download the Hoopla app to use it on a tablet or mobile device.

Overdrive: https://pls.overdrive.com/peninsulaca-sanmateo/kids Large collection of ebooks and audiobooks, although some may be checked out, so you may need to place a hold on them. You can download the Libby (Overdrive) app to read or listen to books on a tablet or mobile device, or send ebooks to your Kindle.  

Axis360: https://smcl.axis360.baker-taylor.com/ Ebooks and audiobooks that can be checked out and read on a computer or on the Axis360 app on a tablet or mobile device. Some books may be checked out, so you may need to put them on hold. 

Tumblebook Library: https://www.tumblebooklibrary.com/Home.aspx?categoryID=77 Animated read-along storybooks, ebooks, educational videos, games and puzzles, all always available. Also includes a number of books in Spanish and French.

Open Library: https://openlibrary.org/ This massive collection of ebooks is available to anyone, with or without a library card. Simply create an account with an email address and password, and borrow books for an hour or up to two weeks.
